What are Scouts?

Scouts is where the real adventure begins! This section is for young people who are ready to take on bigger challenges, build leadership skills, and enjoy outdoor adventures with friends. Scouts learn teamwork, independence, and community spirit — all while having fun and learning by doing.

Ages

Scouts are typically aged 12 to 15 (~6th class to 3rd Year), bridging the gap between Cubs and Ventures. At this stage, they take more responsibility for their own programme and adventures, with guidance and support from their Scouters (adult leaders).

Patrols

Scouts work in small teams called Patrols, each with about 6-8 Scouts. Each Patrol has a Patrol Leader (PL) and Assistant Patrol Leader (APL) who help organise activities and guide their team. Patrols encourage teamwork, leadership, and shared responsibility — every Scout has a role, from First Aider to Cook or Quartermaster.

PL Council

Together the patrols come together to form a Troop. PLs & APLs help shape the program through meetings called the PL Council, where they discuss ideas and plan activities.

What do Scouts do?

Scouting is all about doing — getting stuck in, trying new things, and having fun. We meet weekly during school terms, and take part in outdoor adventures, camps, and activities throughout the year.

Outdoor Adventures

Explore the great outdoors through hiking, kayaking, climbing, and exciting expeditions.

Camping

From weekend trips to week-long camps, Scouts learn to live outdoors — pitching tents, cooking, and building camp gadgets.

Scouting Skills

Master practical outdoor skills like knots, map reading, first aid, and pioneering through hands-on learning.

Community Service

Scouts give back to their community through volunteering, local events, and acts of service that make a difference.

What else do Scouts do?

Adventure Badges

Earn badges by challenging themselves, learning new skills, and achieving personal goals.

Planning Activities

Scouts help plan their own adventures, taking responsibility for what they do and how they do it.

County, Provincial & National Events

Take part in county, provincial, and national events that bring hundreds of Scouts together for large-scale events, adventures, and camps.

Camp Competitions

Scouts test their teamwork and skills in events such as the County Shield and National Phoenix Challenge.

Where we meet

We typically meet in Blackwater Church Carpark from 7 - 8.30pm on Fridays during school term.
When the weather is bad or we need to work indoors, we may meet at Blackwater Parish Hall.
Occasionally we may meet at other locations for special events or activities - this will always be communicated in advance via the parents' WhatsApp group.
